Peacock Feather - Step by Step

I've been working on another peacock feather painting, a little different to this one so I thought I'd share with you the steps taken to arrive at the finished result.

Peacock Feather - string/acrylic/iridescent medium on wood - SOLD

This is a technique I've invented myself over the years.  First of all I start off with a piece of wood as this is easier to cut the string on (as opposed to canvas).  I apply a layer of papier maché to create some texture but also to create a barrier as the wood is quite porous.

Once dry, I paint the base with acrylic paints. Then I can start to draw out the subject in chalks and start to work out the direction of the string.  For feathers this is relatively easy because feathers are like tiny little bits of string held together in any case. After this I can start to glue the string.  For this work I'm using cotton.

I will continue working this way to match the left hand side.  After this process I will apply a product which will seal the string.  Once this is thoroughly dry, then I can start to paint in the normal way using either oils or acrylics, it doesn't matter.  This one is in acrylics to which I have also mixed an iridescent medium so that the light plays with the colours.

Here's the finished article.

My inspiration - Art Gallery (1)

I've been itching to get back in the studio lately to paint. I often have fairly long breaks between painting and find myself mentally taking a different road. Lately, I've been thinking more and more abstract. I've resisted this for a long time, I like realism and conditioning always told me that there was more skill involved in this kind of work. I feel though that I'm somehow working against myself and what I really want to do. I've been looking around to get some inspiration and these are some of my favourites.

art_honesty_painting

I've been fascinated by this plant since childhood. Maybe it was something to do with the name Honesty and the fact that it openly showed you where it kept it's seeds.

art_painting_4

This painting has so much detail to it. I love the total fantasy element and the fact that the artist clearly really enjoyed doing this.

art_painting_3

Again the fantasy element of this painting is what grabbed me together with the soft organic colours. Although there is much colour, they are muted and give this a lovely softness.

art_painting_2

This one reminded me of bark and tree stumps. I love the almost monochromatic colour scheme and the incredible amount of detail.

art_painting_rocks

This one has quite a graphic feel to it and although they are clealry rocks, the colours and textures have been exaggerated.

You can visit these artists and see more of their work by clicking on the images.
