Wee Scrapper - Oil on Canvas.

This painting is quite life size, and has caught a few family members and friends offguard when entering a room and seeing this when I had it resting in a chair waiting to be taken away to be exhibited.

I loved painting this one, it was one of those paintings that just flowed.

I've always been impressed by people or organizations that build and fight their way to the top, quite often being confronted by far bigger and more powerful opponents. I love boxing, and what better way to tell the story of the underdog fighting to the top, than that of a wee tough character, gritting his teeth, not backing down, and squaring up to someone far bigger. He knows he's going to take a few hard knocks, but he's going to come out on top no matter what.

Being a non smoker, I was pleased about the UK ban on smoking in public places. I've lost count of the number of times I've returned home reeking of second hand smoke. It did however occur to me, that it was a bit unfair on those that don't chain smoke in public places, and this is one of the very few comforts that they desire, to enjoy a smoke along with a drink.

I wanted to show this with the image of a middle aged man, still working and clearly a labourer. A clear example of the backbone of our nation. Here he is enjoying a few of the simple pleasures he desires in life, a smoke and a dram.

This is quite a large oil painting, and I experimented with some new ideas of moving the oil around the canvas using my fingers and pieces of cloth. I was very pleased with the results, and continue to use the same methods with other paintings.

The Sound Of War - Oil on canvas. Original size - 60 cm by 80 cm.

I painted this to remind people that the horrors of war also have a terrible impact on the soldiers fighting the wars.

I wanted to make the image neutral and universal, so I made no distinction to the uniforms or the ethnic background of the soldiers.  I actually really anguished over this painting, it gave me many sleepless nights.

I have exhibited this painting in quite a few exhibitions alongside the work of some great artists.

I've witnessed a few people become emotional over this painting.

I sold this painting at Mctears art auction in Glasgow for £700.
