Has anyone had trouble with Carpal Tunnel ? 8 Years ago
I was told several years ago, that the pain in my wrist and hand was carpal tunnel. The neurologist who told me suggested surgery, but coward that I am, I resisted for as long as possible. He told me that it was worse in my right hand, but for some reason, it was the left hand that was giving me the most trouble. I didn`t even know anything was wrong with my right hand. Anyway, I finally agreed to surgery for the left hand around a year ago. It is fine now, but it took months for my hand to even feel normal. The surgeon had told me to expect unusual pain, and occasional episodes where my fingers would litterally get stuck in one position. It is finally back to normal, and hasn`t had much effect on my painting. However, for the past month or so, the right hand is really bothering me to the point where I am fairly sure it will eventually need surgery.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if it affected thier ability to produce artwork. I don`t want to have to stop painting for as long as it took my left hand to go back to normal.
At this point, I am wearing the wrist brace at night, but it would be pretty awkward to paint or draw with it on. I intend to put off the surgery for as long as possible, but I know that eventually, I won`t have a choice.

I'm sorry you're having this problem Joan. I've got the beginnings of it too so I guess one day, I will also need surgery. My ex mother in law also had it done. It took just 6 weeks for her hands to get better and then she was completely back to normal. She never had any trouble after that so it suprises me that you still struggled after the surgery.

Well, I can't comment about the carpal tunnel, but I hear you about delaying as long as possible. I spend my days with my arms out in front of me, rotating glass tubes. They start off 5' long and 32mm in diameter. They can be pretty heavy hanging out there and I have a bad rotator cuff. I can't have it repaired because I can't be out of commission that long....hmmmmm.....yep....no one thinks about the physical side of what we do much do they?

I think most people thing that being creative is quite a sedentary occupation but it's the repetitive movement that gets us in the end I think.

My hands became curled up, but after using a gel rest the problem cleared up.
