Hey sylvine, if the kiln is for pmc its not really necessary - you can torch most things. It's just rings that won't really be strong enough, but leaves and smally things like that you could just get a torch for, that would work fine. I want a kiln as I really fancy starting on rings, I have so many ideas, but the consensus seems to be that its just a no no as far as rings are concerned.

Thank you! That's good to know. I'll look into torches...torched pieces would still need to be tumbled to smooth down the white coating, correct?

No. The crude (without loads of equipment) stages are:
shape it
dry it
sand it to smooth it
torch it
brass brush it to get rid of the white (or smooth down as you say)
(which you still have to do even with a tumbler)
then you can either
sand again for mirror finish, leave as it is (satin type finish) or tumble for shiny finish.

I got a tumbler as many of the bits I make are teeny weeny and it hurts your fingers in the end, but if you want a stunning finish you get that by hand anyway.

A dremmel is good, that will save loads of time if you have one of those.

You might also need nitric acid for re-polishing/refining.
