TOPIC: Favorite fabric to work with?
#6466
Re:Favorite fabric to work with? 1 Year, 6 Months ago
We should have another topic: My least favorite fabric to work with!

Cynde, have you ever sewed jersey with glued on sequins? (only ever used this fabric when some of my cross-dressing clients twisted my arm for Halloween costumes)! I have an industrial machine and even so, I need to wipe the needle with acetone after every few inches of sewing, or things get gummed up very fast.
It takes forever to make an Abba jumpsuit

Hemp is great though and acid dyes work very well on hemp as long as you use plenty of salt in the dye bath.
So stupid that hemp can't be grown over here-it's not like we can smoke it anyway!
Hemp yarn is becoming popular in California though (we can thank all the hippies)!

Least favorite? Hmmmm, I'll have to think about that one. I've always hated trying to put a slippery lining next to a tougher fabric. It took me forever to figure out to FLIP it over so whatever I was joining the lining to was on the feed dogs. (I'm a self taught seamstress - I had to learn the hard way!)

On the topic of least favorite, I'd have to say anything that clogs up my Singer! I got some synthetic leather that ended up not working out because the foam on the back would come off and get caught in my machine.

Hi All,

I just found this thread and found it very interesting hope its ok to jump in.

As a felter I love felting with different fabrics. A few weeks ago I would have said my fave was Silk chiffon for Nuno felting. However I have just discovered Scrim and all the lovely texture you can get using it and I'm obsessed with it at the moment. Its can be flat and soft or scrunched up and trapped in for raising the felt. its can even be used to trap other fibers under it like wool nepps, string, pom poms. and so on. see photo

Least Fave is hessian! Its so rough on my hands and seems to take an age to felt in but it has an interesting effect in felt.

Karin I haven't worked with a jersey with sequins, but I have sewn a satin summer top that had them glued on the fabric. Oh my goodness was is a nightmare to sew!!! I get more compliments on the top though. It was an amazing piece my sister had sent me...however I leave little sequins everywhere I go as they have fallen off over time.

Thanks Kathy for the compliment on my photographs....who know the back of my chicken coop and a broken chair would make a perfect photo studio? It just seems to set off and make my fabric choices pop. I am really loving the branding it is giving me too. You know I can sew anything all day, but then the photography part has been the hardest. I knew nothing...shill don't know much. I literally looked though listings of all kinds and started trying to imitaite they ones I liked.

I need to get busy on ruffley wallets.....they are starting to be a hit
Have a great day everyone. Ooooh I almost forgot, felting with silk chiffon sounds amazing! I know nothing about that one.
