Re:Being Artistic Can Be Depressing 4 Years, 5 Months ago
Probably a common trait for artists, having a mess of ideas in your head and finding it difficult to pin one down and give it your best shot. I find the starting out is the hardest part, once I'm engrossed in it then it flows and it's difficult to stop!

One thing I think which helps me is having a dog. Really! I have to take him out every day, no matter what the weather, for about 2 hours. Usually walking on the beach or across the heaths and marshes with no company but my thoughts, I use this time to hone my ideas and visualise what I hope to achieve and how to go about it, coming back with a definite plan and renewed enthusiasm.

If you lend someone £20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

I think having a dog, and that responsibility, is a great way to recharge in general. I can see it helping with the whole creative thought process.

I think it's about having the time to be 'still' and think. Meditation is good for this too. It quietens busy minds. Playing my saxophone is my way of switching off from everything, then when I finish, I can think more clearly again.

I have enjoyed reading this thread. I assume it is normal to have several projects on the go at the same time. I find it difficult to concentrate so I usually start something else and then return back to what I was doing later. It helps me to see more clearly.

Blu, I do that too but mainly because I get bored very easily. By having several projects on the go, I can stop myself getting bored and keep the momentum going.

I think it`s a good idea to have more than one project at a time. I had never thought of before, but for the past several days, I have been working on a painting that is much more difficult than I was expecting. I had been looking at the picture as a whole-a photo of a Mass. harbor, taken by my brother. It`s a wonderful scene, but harder to paint than I thought. I`ve had the idea in my head that I should start another painting that I know won`t give me fits. so I can work on that when the other one frustrates me. I think if I do that, the harbor scene will be better when it`s finally done.
