That's really interesting! In the US, the FDA doesn't regulate soap or candles at all. As long as it's truly soap (as opposed to a cleanser made with chemicals), they just don't get involved. It sounds a lot more involved and expensive in France.

It always amazes me, the differences in regulations. I'm also a face painter, which is also completely unregulated in the US (which is why you'll see unscrupulous "professional" painters using supplies like tempera and acrylic paints and craft glitter on faces, rather than buying actual face paint makeup). Yet I have friends in Canada who face regulations that rival the most stringent in the cosmetic industry... and only in parts of Canada, because it depends on the province.

RE: Facepainting... Alberta Canada is especially stringent where you must sanitize brushes between each person. On the flip, people who promote acrylics as a suitable paint for children should be lashed with a wet noodle!

That's it - Alberta! A new sponge for each person, and sanitized brushes.

And I agree with you on the acrylic painters, though I'd be harsher about it than wet noodles. I take safety seriously and it drives me insane to see them. Even the NY Renaissance Faire painters use acrylics, despite my repeated emails and letters to the people running the faire. They just don't care.

It's sad people don't care about safety - there's a wide range of price points for face paints so I'm sure it wouldn't totally break the organizer's and/or facepainter's budget.

That's what I've tried to tell them... and that it'll get a LOT more expensive if someone has a reaction and makes a claim. Last summer I saw some face painters attempting FULL FACE black & white designs on these two guys in acrylic paint. Ah, to be a fly on the wall when they tried to get that mess off. It didn't even look good - the craft stuff only works for little swirls.

Their "issue" is that real face paint can sweat off, but acrylics stick. Yeah, ever think there's a good reason for that?

No doubt.
Anyways, we've totally veered off-subject.

Is there a Body Art section on TAS?

Oh, I'm a wanna-be face painter. I did face painting years ago at some local festivals and totally fell in love with it.
