How soon can you varnish oil paintings? 1 Year, 8 Months ago

I recently finished a "commission" (actually, a friend asked me to do a painting from one of her photos), I think about 4 months ago now, and I'm wondering how soon I can varnish it. I've always been told not to do it until after about 6 months, but have things changed at all with spray varnishes?
I'm also a bit concerned about the appearance of part of the painting. For some reason it's dried looking "shinier" than the rest of the painting. I'm hoping that varnishing will solve that problem, but I'd appreciate any advice - or information on why that's happened.

I wonder why nobody has replied to this - it's a genuine question! I'd be grateful for some opinions - I know there are conventional views, but I'm not sure whether things have moved on with the development of new methods and materials. Are there no painters in oils on this forum?

You should be able to use a workable fixative on your painting as soon as it is dry to the touch. I would wait the 6 months to apply varnish, though. You also have to be careful about using a varnish that will not yellow as it ages.

Sorry no one replied sooner David.
I agree with Joan, I would not varnish for 6 months. Yellowing is a problem so do use the best quality varnish you can afford and make sure it's not old.
