Yes, I think you did the right thing. I don't get too precious about my stuff being out there as long as people are not making a fortune from my images. I would get a bit upset then.

Just because you gave away or sold a painting does not necessarily mean that you can't also continue to sell rights to the image, or even sell prints of the image.

But even if you have this legal right (which probably depends on your jurisdiction), you may want to make sure your buyer (or giftee) understands your intent so that there is no ill will.

My son and his wife would not object to my selling prints of the painting. If anything, they would encourage it. They know we could use the money. Also, along with that painting, I allowed them to pick several others when they got married.In all, they have around 10 of my paintings.

I don't know if this is a question of living in different countries with different laws, but I would never consider that just because I sell the original, I no longer retained the copyright to the image. None of my clients have ever questioned it either. I sell cards and prints of all of my works, even commissioned work.
