It's fairly common to use the User Name, but once you get to know someone, you'll figure out what they'd like to be called. Some people have trouble with 'Svartr' so I put my first name in my sig line as an alternative. It's an open invite for anyone to call me Bonita.

I don't suppose it matters Kate. If they have their real name in the forum signature, you could use that, after all, they've made it public. Generally I use people's usernames because it's just better internet etiquette. I get to know some people's names privately but I don't tend to use those publicly unless they have it in their signature.

I have always signed my paintings in the lower right corner as "Jen" with a brush and black paint. Because my writing is bad, and my writing with a brush is worse, no one knew that it wasn't some sort of symbol LOL. I now sign with first and last name - Jen Donald - and attempt to make it somewhat legible.
