Do you all seal your art? I have read about people even using hair spray.

Any thoughts?

I've used hair spray in the days when I used pastels/chalks but I would not recommend it for anything else. When I need to seal my work or if my mixed media is causing the surface to be shiny in places and not others, then I spray with a totally mat varnish. Spraying means I can do it in several thin layers so it's invisible.

I work in acrylics and ALWAYS seal my paintings. I use either a semi-gloss or glossy archival spray finish to put several thin layers on, aiming from different directions each time.

The painting can be wiped with a soft slightly dampened cloth to clean if necessary, and the finish makes the colors POP and adds a nice richness to the overall product.

I've been trying this with my gouache paintings. I first spray several times with a gloss archival varnish, then paint on a few layers of gloss polymer varnish. I've been mounting them on wood and sealing them this way, rather than using a mat and frame.

Many thanks for your thoughts. I like the idea of the colours going pop!
