"You Have To Break A Few"
oil on canvas
Sometimes you have "to break a few eggs" or try different things to go forward. Not always successfully but always a great learning experience.
Like many artists I have definate comfort zones. The hardest thing to me is to move beyond them. Breaking out of using my favorite medium is one of the toughest for me. I know oil paint. I LOVE oil paint. But...I try to use differient mediums from time to time with mixed success, I admit.
It is challenging for me to experiment with media other than oils but more as an exercise than anything else. I truly applaud those who are excellent in multi-media it seems that I would have to devote significant time to each one for real acheivement in anything but my chosen one. For now I still cling to what I do best and continue to make myself venture out now and then to stretch a little more.
I was in bed for a week with the Flu this past Fall and to keep myself from going mad with watching TV I did several pen and ink abstracts that kept me sane.
I have found I don't have the temperment for watercolor, and I love looking at watercolor paintings. The light and luninosity draw me in so easily.
When I see the work of other artists in different mediums it does make me want to expand my range. Then I am pulled back into what I love to do best. I will always struggle with that. I think it is fair to say that at least I am willing to try new things but I have that special place in my heart for oils. It feels like home to me I guess.
